One of the best known diving destinations in Fiji and once christened "The Mecca of Pacific Diving", Beqa Island (pronounced "Benga") lies just thirteen kilometres south of the southern coast of Viti Levu and to the north of Kadavu. Beqa Island can be accessed by boat from Pacific Harbour or Navua or a direct helicopter transfer from some the luxury resorts located at Beqa. This remote and beautiful tropical paradise is not exploited by tourism, so a honeymoon at one of the Beqa resorts is one of tranquillity, peace and breathtaking paradise scenery. There are a number of pretty good sites around Beqa Lagoon and, although there may not be too much in the way of schools of fish or pelagics, there is a good variety of reef life. For less experienced divers or for those who do not wish to take a domestic flight to the outer islands of Fiji, scuba diving at Beqa could be right for you. The resorts are all-inclusive here as there are no nearby towns or cities for dining out and sightseeing. Everything you require for your romantic holiday vacation is provided by the resort. Enjoy luxurious Fijian bure accommodation (there are no hotels on Beqa) usually within a few steps of a white sandy beach. Fresh seafood, fish, locally grown fruits and vegetables are all part of dining pleasure.

The men from Beqa have the ability to walk on fire was first given to a warrior by the name of Tui-na-viqality. He was from the island of Beqa right off the coast of Viti Levu. The legend tells that Tui-na-viqality spared the life of a spirit god while fishing for eels, and in return the spirit god gave him the immunity to fire. His descendants were also given the rite of "vilavilairevo" (jumping into the oven), thus only the members of his tribe, the Sawau tribe perform the ceremony. Tribes that have been adopted by the Sawau have also been able to perform the ceremony. So this special immunity establishes a bond as a collective whole, and these tribes in turn pass on what was learned and given to them. You will get to witness this at any of the resorts on Beqa Island.
